The Living Course

Owner's Manual During your childhood, you constructed a set of beliefs about your world. Based on your personal experiences, you made decisions about who you are and what you are capable of—as well as formulated your beliefs about men, women, family, love, money, success, failure and so on. Those beliefs became your ‘owner’s manual’ which has served to guide you, help you make sense of the world and keep you safe. You see, it goes something like this:

Meet Jenna and Matt…

little girlFive-year old Jenna begins climbing to the top of the jungle gym. With her heart pounding, she musters all her courage and stands up, balanced perfectly on the bars with arms spread wide. Feeling accomplished and invigorated, she looks down at her classmates who are all clapping and cheering for her.
little boyFive-year old Matt also decides to climb to the top of the jungle gym. With his heart pounding, he courageously attempts to stand, but while doing so, he loses his footing, slips through the bars and falls flat on his face. Feeling discouraged and embarrassed, he looks up to find his classmates pointing and jeering at him.

Now how might these differing experiences impact them?

Based on her experience of achievement, Jenna may determine that she is brave, and that when she takes risks, she will be successful. Given all the positive attention from the other children, she might even decide that standing out from the crowd is a great thing.

With these beliefs about herself filed in the back of her mind, would it surprise you if Jenna were to grow up to be a woman who willfully steps out of her comfort zone, is successful in many of her life’s ventures and thrives in the public recognition of her endeavors?

Matt’s experience was very different. Feeling hurt and humiliated, he might determine that life is painful and therefore something to be afraid of; that taking a risk is dangerous and can only end badly. He may ultimately decide that being noticed by others only causes pain and should be avoided at all costs.

With these beliefs filed away, it would make sense if adult Matt were to spend most of his time alone trying not to be noticed. Taking few risks and never leaving the safety of his comfort zone, he may continue through life without experiencing much joy or personal fulfillment.

Now, you may be thinking, “What do these two kids have to do with me?” Well, you were a child once, yes? You, too, had experience after experience, and based on the emotions you felt at the time, you ‘wrote’ each of them down in your owner’s manual. The problem is, your owner’s manual has a huge flaw: It was written by a child, not by an adult with more reasoning capabilities. You made those decisions when you were too little to make proper sense of what the events really meant.

Even though we grow up, we never really shake those early decisions. And even more impactful is that many of them create limiting beliefs in our subconscious by which we continue to live our lives.

The Living Course (TLC) is a 30-hour personal development weekend designed to help you claim your true potential, gain personal insight and adopt new means to create the life you want.

Alfred Adler & Rudolf DreikursTLC is based on the work of Alfred Adler, the father of individual psychology and his protégé, eminent child psychiatrist Rudolf Dreikurs, who believed that the events one experiences during childhood have a strong impact on the decisions one makes about life. Therefore, decisions you made as a child have become the foundation of your private belief system, and while these beliefs may have served you well as a child, many of them may have inhibited your ability to live the life you desire today. TLC will assist you in examining those out-dated beliefs and offer the tools by which to re-decide. By eliminating deep-rooted obstacles, The Living Course allows for success in choosing joy, peace and closeness with others.
